herpes whitlow masturbation -

Sep 26, 2015 · In my reading about herpes, I came across something known as "herpetic whitlow", which is where sometimes people can get one of their fingers infected with it. I was worried if this could result from masturbating during an outbreak. The nurse told me that in her eight years working at the clinic, she had seen ONE case of herpetic whitlow. Further, auto-inoculation (self transmission from one body part to another) does not occur except during the initial herpes infection; it's not an issue for recurrent herpes. Herpes whitlow or self-inoculation of the eyes occurs never or only very rarely in people with recurrent herpes.

Herpetic whitlow—also called digital herpes simplex, finger herpes, or hand herpes—is a painful viral infection occurring on the fingers or around the fingernails. Herpetic whitlow is caused by infection with the herpes simplex virus (HSV). Infections with HSV are very contagious and are easily spread by direct contact with infected skin lesions. Herpetic whitlow is a self-limited disease, caused by herpes simplex virus HPV 1 or HPV 2. Treatment most often is directed toward symptomatic relief, differently from person to person. In primary infections, topical acyclovir 5% has been demonstrated to shorten the duration of symptoms.
